چکیده

The Holstein-Primakoff transformation is generalized to develop a quantum flavor wave theory for spin systems with orbital degeneracy. Elementary excitations of ordered ground states consist of spin, orbital , and spinorbital waves. Spin and spin-orbital waves couple to each other due to orbital anisotropy and Hund’s rule, resulting in new modes observable by inelastic neutron scattering. In the SU(4) limit, flavor waves are dispersionless along one or more directions, and give rise to quantum fluctuations of reduced dimensionality. PACS number(s): 75.10.-b, 75.10.Jm, 75.30.Ds, 11.30.-j

Ground state and excitations of a spin chain with orbital degeneracy

The one-dimensional Heisenberg model in the presence of orbital degeneracy is studied at the SU(4) symmetric point by means of Bethe ansatz. Following Sutherland’s previous work on an equivalent model, we discuss the ground state and the low-lying excitations more extensively in connection to the spin systems with orbital degeneracy. We show explicitly that the ground state is a SU(4) singlet. ...

Quantum behavior of orbitals in ferromagnetic titanates: novel orderings and excitations.

We investigate the collective behavior of orbital angular momentum in the spin ferromagnetic state of a Mott insulator with t(2g) orbital degeneracy. The frustrated nature of the interactions leads to an infinite degeneracy of classical states. Quantum effects select four distinct orbital orderings. Two of them have a quadrupolar order, while the other states show in addition weak orbital magne...

Theory of electrons with orbital degeneracy

The Hubbard model for electrons with orbital degeneracy is shown to have an underlying SUd(4) symmetry of spin-orbital double. A hidden charge SUc(4) symmetry is exposed and an extended Lieb-Mattis transformation, which maps these two symmetries into each other, is given. On the basis of elementary degenerate perturbative theory, it is shown that the system with strong repulsive coupling is equ...

Theory of orbital state and spin interactions in ferromagnetic titanates

A spin-orbital superexchange Hamiltonian in a Mott insulator with t2g orbital degeneracy is investigated. More specifically, we focus on a spin ferromagnetic state of the model and study a collective behavior of orbital angular momentum. Orbital order in the model occurs in a nontrivial way—it is stabilized exclusively by quantum effects through the order-from-disorder mechanism. Several energe...
